Yes! The view of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak is worth the effort of getting there

I know. The thought of standing in a long line for a tram ride up to Victoria peak in Hong Kong wasn’t very high on my to do list either. If it’s not extremely hot and humid in Hong Kong, it’s usually raining. Those are not ideal line queuing conditions. Not by a long shot.

That said, it’s the first thing I do whenever I visit Hong Kong. The view from Victoria Peak is that good.

See? I’m not kidding. It’s that good.

What you can expect

First of all, you will stand in line at the base of the mountain as you wait for the tram. No matter what the weather conditions are, no matter what time of day it is, no matter if it’s a holiday, weekend, or weekday. There’s always a line.

The people watching is really good though.

Standing in line while waiting for the tram. For what it’s worth, it took me 45 minutes to get this close. Almost there!

It’s not very often that I feel like others are envious of me, but I can guarantee the most everybody in this picture is jealous of my position in line. Who’s next to board the tram? This guy.

The ride to the top

Once on the tram, it takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the top. It’s a very steep ride. Your neck will hurt as you try to hold your head upright. The incredible views of the city as you climb above it will distract you from any discomfort you may be feeling. It’s a good kind of pain.

I’m on! And I’m obviously not the only white person here today. If you wanna surround yourself with other tourists in Hong Kong (like me), this is the place to do it.

Does your neck hurt yet? Don’t worry. It will.

The views

The first thing you’ll notice once you reach the top is that Victoria Peak consists mostly of shops and restaurants. The observation deck is only a small part of the attraction. One way or another, they’re going to get your money.

It’s busy up here! Be prepared to jostle for position as you seek the best spot to grab a photo.

The patience of a Monk will be required as you wait for a spot along the railing to open up.

Waiting. Patiently. Not so Monk-like though. I’m not very good at that lol.

Patience will be rewarded. If you don’t die of heat stroke.

You’re not afraid of heights are you? The views (and low railings) are not for the timid.

Want an even better view than this? Come here at night! Just a word warning though: everybody else in Hong Kong will have exactly the same idea, so be prepared for bigger crowds and longer lines.

Don’t worry if you’re unable to get up here at night though. The daytime views are impressive enough. I recommend sunglasses!

Is it worth it?

Heck yeah it is. Even though I consider to be the biggest tourist trap in all of Hong Kong, it is absolutely worth a visit. As I said – it’s some thing I do every time I visit Hong Kong. I’ve seen a bunch of times already. And I can’t wait to see it again.
